The Gose - a speciality of Leipzig
There are things that simply belong to Leipzig:The Zill's Tunnel, the fair, the Battle Monument, the Allerlei, the shopping arcades of the citycentre - and a special beer called Gose.
Indeed it doesn't come from the Pleisse, but - as the name implies - from the small river Gose, which flows through Goslar. There they brewed the unique thirst quencher already in the 14th Century. A legend has it that the Gose arrived Leipzig, in the 18th Century through the mediation of the Prince Leopold of Anhalt - Dessau, who disliked the taste of local beer.
The fair city dwellers were so enthusiastic about the drink, that Leipzig soon became the undisputed Gose stronghold. Gose is no ordinary beer, even top-fermented, but very special in its flavour due to the addition of coriander and salt. Its high content of biological lactic acid causes the typical tingling sensation in the mouth.
By the way the true connoisseur enjoys his Gose not pure, but, depending on your preferences with a touch of cherry liqueur, syrup or caraway liqueur.
